Local Start-Up Financial Assistance Policy

The University of Thessaly, through its Innovation–Technology Transfer Unit and Entrepreneurship Center (UTH Innovation–TTU & EC), hereby establishes the Local Start-Up Financial Assistance Policy.

This policy aims to support the creation and sustainability of financially and socially responsible businesses within the local and regional community of Thessaly. The policy aligns with the objectives and operational framework defined in the Regulation of the Innovation–Technology Transfer Unit and Entrepreneurship Center (Government Gazette B 7493/31.12.2024) and in accordance with the provisions of Law 4957/2022, Articles 211 and 222.

The University provides financial assistance mechanisms—including microgrants, seed funding, and co-financing schemes—to innovative start-ups and social enterprises that demonstrate clear social, environmental, or regional development impact. Apart from free incubation services, UTh also facilitates the access of startups to potential funding sources. In addition, UTh provides mentorship and training workshops, as well as access to clients and investors to support participants to develop and scale up their business ideas into impactful ventures. These mechanisms are implemented in coordination with the UTH Innovation–Technology Transfer Unit and the University’s Research Committee (Επιτροπή Ερευνών), and may leverage funding from the University’s own resources, external sponsors, or European and national programmes.

In line with Article 7 of the Technology Transfer Unit Regulation, the financial management of these funds is conducted transparently through distinct accounts within the Special Account for Research Funds (ELKE) or via the University Asset Management and Exploitation Company, ensuring compliance with national fiscal regulations.

Priority is given to start-ups founded by members of the University community (students, faculty, researchers, and staff or alumni) and by local residents of low or moderate income, provided they pursue sustainable, innovative and community-oriented projects.

All applicants are evaluated on the basis of economic viability, social impact, and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 8 and 9).

The University of Thessaly reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem by combining academic knowledge, entrepreneurial culture, and financial empowerment of local innovators. It enables, therefore, entrepreneurs to overcome challenges, create sustainable businesses, and contribute meaningfully to the local and global community.
