Contribution to Local Arts and Cultural Heritage

1. Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to affirm the University of Thessaly’s commitment to supporting and enriching the cultural life of the local and regional communities through its artistic, musical, and theatrical activities. The University recognizes that its cultural initiatives — including choirs, theatre groups, orchestras, exhibitions, and festivals — form an integral part of its social mission and heritage contribution.

2. Scope

This Policy applies to all cultural and artistic activities organized, hosted, or supported by the University of Thessaly, including: university choirs and orchestras, student and faculty theatre groups, dance and performance ensembles, visual arts exhibitions and festivals, and collaborations with municipal and regional cultural institutions. It covers both regular and ad hoc cultural events presented in public.

3. Legal and Institutional Context

The University’s cultural and artistic activities are conducted in accordance with: Law 4485/2017 (Framework for Higher Education); Law 3525/2007 (Cultural Sponsorship and Support for Arts); Law 3028/2002 (Protection of Cultural Heritage); Greek Constitution, Article 16; and UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

4. Policy Statement

  1. The University of Thessaly contributes actively to the promotion and development of local arts and cultural heritage.
    2. The University organizes and supports public performances, exhibitions, and artistic events by its choirs, orchestras, theatre groups, and artistic collectives.
    3. Cultural activities may be ad hoc or part of established annual programs coordinated by the University’s Cultural Affairs Office.
    4. The University ensures that such performances are free and open to the public, fostering cultural participation and accessibility.
    5. The University shall record and report annually the number of performances, exhibitions, and cultural events held, as indicators of its contribution to local arts.
    6. Collaboration with municipalities, cultural foundations, museums, and schools shall be encouraged to enhance public cultural engagement.
    7. The University shall ensure that all venues used for performances and exhibitions are accessible, in accordance with Policy #82 (Accessible Facilities).
    8. Cultural programs shall respect diversity, inclusivity, and the promotion of local and regional cultural identity.
    9. The University will maintain archives of its artistic productions and performances as part of its institutional cultural heritage.
    10. The University will seek external partnerships and sponsorships to expand the reach and sustainability of its cultural initiatives.

5. Implementation and Responsibilities

– The Rector oversees implementation and strategic coordination.
– Departmental artistic groups (choirs, theatre, music ensembles) coordinate their activities under this policy.
– The Public Relations Office manages programming, event coordination, and partnerships with external organizations.
– The Public Relations Office promotes events through the University’s communication channels.

6. Monitoring and Review

The Public Relations Office shall maintain an annual report detailing the number and type of cultural events held, attendance figures, and collaboration outcomes with community partners. This Policy shall be reviewed every three (3) years or earlier, as needed.
