Events for Conservation and Sustainable Utilisation of the Oceans, Seas, and Water Resources

1. Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to define the University of Thessaly’s commitment to organizing and supporting events and initiatives that promote the conservation and sustainable utilisation of the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and marine resources. The Policy fosters awareness, education, and research collaboration in alignment with international frameworks for ocean sustainability.

2. Scope

This Policy applies to all University departments and research centers related to marine, environmental, and social sciences; the organization and support of conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and campaigns; collaborations with authorities, NGOs, and international bodies; and educational outreach to schools and the community.

3. Legal and Institutional Context

This Policy aligns with: Law 4936/2022 (National Climate Law); Law 4822/2021 (Sustainability and Environmental Management); Law 2742/1999 (Coastal Zone Management); EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC); EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030; UNCLOS; and UN SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

4. Policy Statement

  1. The University of Thessaly commits to supporting and organizing events that promote conservation and sustainable use of oceans and freshwater ecosystems.
    2. Activities include international conferences, public awareness campaigns, workshops, student participation in global events, and open lectures.
    3. The University collaborates with ministries, local authorities, NGOs, and international research networks (e.g., UNEP/MAP, HELMEPA).
    4. Inclusivity and community participation are core principles.
    5. The University promotes scientific study and public education on marine sustainability.
    6. Annual records of related events will be maintained within Sustainability Reports.

5. Implementation and Responsibilities

– The Rector oversees implementation.
– The Departments of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, and Environmental Sciences coordinate marine initiatives.
– The Sustainability Committee ensures integration with environmental policy.
– The Public Relations Office manages communication and outreach.
– Each Faculty should host at least one relevant event annually.

6. Monitoring and Review

The Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years. Indicators include the number of events organized, participation rates, and partnerships with environmental bodies.
