Reduction of Plastic Waste on Campus

1. Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to define the University of Thessaly’s framework for reducing and ultimately eliminating plastic waste generated across its campuses. The Policy aims to minimize environmental pollution, support circular economy principles, and promote a sustainable, low-waste culture among students, staff, and visitors.

2. Scope

This Policy applies to all University departments, administrative units, and facilities; campus food services, vending operations, and catering contracts; events and student activities; procurement and supply chain practices; and partnerships with vendors and suppliers providing goods or services to the University.

3. Legal and Institutional Context

This Policy aligns with: Law 4819/2021 (Circular Economy and Waste Management); Law 4736/2020 (Single-Use Plastics Directive Transposition); EU Directive 2019/904 (Reduction of the Impact of Certain Plastic Products on the Environment); National Waste Management Plan 2020–2030; and UN SDGs 12 and 14.

4. Policy Statement

  1. The University is committed to reducing plastic waste and promoting alternatives to single-use plastics.
    2. The University shall prohibit the use of single-use plastic items (straws, cutlery, cups, etc.) and replace plastic bottles with refillable or biodegradable options.
    3. Campus-wide refill stations and recycling bins will be installed.
    4. Supplier contracts will include sustainability clauses.
    5. Dining services must transition to certified sustainable packaging.
    6. Awareness campaigns will educate staff and students.
    7. All University events should be plastic-free whenever feasible.
    8. Adoption efforts on international practices for reducing laboratory plasticware.

5. Implementation and Responsibilities

– The Rector oversees implementation.
– The Procurement Office ensures sustainable purchasing.
– The Technical Services Department installs refill and recycling stations.
– The Sustainability Committee monitors progress.
– The Public Relations Office promotes awareness and engagement.

6. Monitoring and Review

The Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years. Indicators include reduction in single-use plastic purchases, increased recycling rates, number of refill stations, and community participation.
