Reducing Marine Pollution

1. Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to define the University of Thessaly’s commitment to reducing marine pollution through sustainable operations, applied research, and stakeholder engagement. It reflects the University’s dedication to protecting marine and aquatic ecosystems of the Aegean Sea, where its coastal campuses operate, along with the rivers and other freshwater systems, including subsurface waters, in the vicinity of UTH premises

2. Scope

This Policy applies to all University campuses and facilities, research and outreach activities, partnerships with industries and NGOs, and educational programs addressing marine pollution.

3. Legal and Institutional Context

This Policy aligns with: Law 4936/2022 (National Climate Law); Law 4819/2021 (Circular Economy); Law 3199/2003 (Water Management); EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC); EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC); EU Directive 2019/904 (Single-Use Plastics); and UN SDG 14.

4. Policy Statement

  1. The University is committed to reducing all forms of marine pollution, including plastics, chemicals, and wastewater.
    2. The University shall monitor discharges and manage wastewater to prevent marine contamination.
    3. Single-use plastics will be eliminated and sustainable alternatives promoted.
    4. Research will be conducted on marine pollution sources, impacts, and prevention technologies.
    5. Awareness and education campaigns will be organized to promote marine stewardship.
    6. Collaboration with local communities, authorities, and industries will promote best practices.
    7. All waste disposal will comply with Greek and EU legislation.

5. Implementation and Responsibilities

– The Rector oversees implementation.
– The Departments of Marine Sciences, Environmental Engineering, and Ichthyology lead relevant research and actions.
– The Technical Services Department manages safe waste systems.
– The Sustainability Committee monitors and evaluates implementation.
– The Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment will provse scientific consultancy.

 

6. Monitoring and Review

The Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years. Indicators include reduction of pollutants, research outputs, outreach events, and compliance with environmental standards.
