Programs towards Good Aquatic Stewardship Practices

1. Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to establish the University of Thessaly’s commitment to promoting good aquatic stewardship practices through education, research, community outreach, and institutional initiatives. It aims to encourage responsible interaction with marine, coastal, and freshwater ecosystems, supporting their sustainable use, restoration, and protection.

2. Scope

This Policy applies to all departments and research units involved in aquatic sciences and environmental management; programs, projects, and partnerships focusing on water resource conservation; public awareness campaigns and community engagement activities; incentives or recognitions for sustainable aquatic management practices; and collaborations with local authorities, industries, and NGOs.

3. Legal and Institutional Context

This Policy aligns with: Law 3199/2003 (Water Protection and Management); Law 4819/2021 (Circular Economy and Waste Management); Law 3937/2011 (Biodiversity Conservation); EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC); EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC); EU Directive 2019/904 (Reduction of Plastic Pollution); and UN SDGs 6 and 14.

4. Policy Statement

  1. The University is committed to fostering a culture of good aquatic stewardship within its community and through external collaborations.
    2. The University shall:
    – Design and implement educational programs on sustainable water use and aquatic conservation.
    – Integrate aquatic stewardship principles into curricula.
    – Support community-based initiatives for water protection and biodiversity conservation.
    – Establish research programs promoting ecosystem restoration and sustainable management.
    – Develop incentive mechanisms (awards, grants, certifications) for departments or groups practicing good aquatic stewardship.
    – Organize public seminars, workshops, and volunteer clean-up events.
    – Collaborate with municipalities, NGOs, and industries to promote responsible aquatic practices.
    3. The University encourages participation from staff, students, and local communities to build long-term stewardship capacity.

5. Implementation and Responsibilities

– The Rector oversees implementation.
– The Department of  Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment will coordinate academic and research-based programs.
– The Sustainability Committee develops and monitors incentive schemes.
– The Public Relations promotes awareness and public engagement.
– The Center for Lifelong Learning

6. Monitoring and Review

The Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years. Indicators include the number of educational and outreach programs implemented, participation rates, related research projects, and improvements in aquatic ecosystem indicators.
