Educational Outreach for Sustainable Land Management in Agriculture
1. Purpose
This policy establishes the University of Thessaly’s commitment, where possible, to providing educational programmes and outreach initiatives on the sustainable management of agricultural land. Its purpose is to promote environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible agricultural practices through education, research dissemination, and community engagement at the local and national levels.
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
– All educational and extension activities organized by the University relating to sustainable agriculture and soil management.
– Training programmes for farmers, cooperatives, and rural communities.
– Collaborative outreach with governmental and non-governmental agricultural organizations.
– Public engagement projects and lifelong learning initiatives on sustainable land use and food production.
It encompasses both formal (academic) and informal (community-based) education efforts.
3. Definitions
– Sustainable land management: Practices that integrate land, water, biodiversity, and environmental management to meet human needs while ensuring long-term productivity.
– Educational outreach: University-led training and engagement initiatives aimed at non-academic audiences.
– Extension programme: Structured dissemination of scientific knowledge and techniques to agricultural practitioners and communities.
4. Policy Statement
The University of Thessaly recognizes that education and knowledge transfer are central to the transformation of agricultural systems toward sustainability. The University will:
1. Develop and deliver training programmes on soil conservation, efficient water use, and sustainable agricultural practices.
2. Engage local and national communities in workshops, demonstrations, and participatory projects.
3. Promote the use of renewable energy and circular economy principles in agriculture.
4. Support the dissemination of research findings on climate-smart and precision farming.
5. Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between agricultural sciences, engineering, and economics departments.
6. Provide lifelong learning opportunities for farmers, rural youth, and agricultural professionals.
5. Implementation Responsibilities
The Departments of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with the Lifelong Learning Center and the Sustainability Committee, shall oversee the implementation of this policy. Specific responsibilities include:
– Designing and offering accredited training programmes on sustainable land management.
– Coordinating field-based learning and extension services.
– Partnering with regional agricultural directorates, cooperatives, and NGOs.
– Maintaining an online repository of educational materials and best practices, where feasible .
– Monitoring the participation and impact of outreach activities.
6. Monitoring and Reporting
Annual monitoring reports shall document:
– The number, type, and audience of educational and outreach programmes delivered.
– Quantitative outcomes (participants trained, hectares of land managed under sustainable practices).
– Qualitative outcomes (improved awareness, adoption of sustainable techniques).
– Collaborative activities with regional or national agricultural authorities.
The Sustainability Committee will integrate these reports into the University’s Annual Sustainability Report and submit relevant data to international ranking frameworks (e.g., THE Impact Rankings – SDG 2 and SDG 15).
7. Review and Amendment
This policy shall be reviewed every three (3) years or earlier if required by updates in national agricultural policy, European Union directives, or institutional strategic plans. Revisions shall be proposed by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and approved by the Governing Council.
