Access to Food Security Knowledge Policy

The University of Thessaly (UTh) is committed to contributing actively to the achievement of food security and sustainable agricultural development at the local, regional, and national levels. Recognizing the vital role of universities in ensuring the resilience and sustainability of food systems, the University provides access to scientific knowledge, research results, technological innovations, and specialized training in the areas of food security, sustainable agriculture, and aquaculture to farmers, producers, cooperatives, and agri-food enterprises.

This policy supports the University’s strategic mission to promote regional development, social innovation, and sustainable resource management, in accordance with Law 4957/2022 (Articles 251–254) on social responsibility and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2, SDG 12, and SDG 17). It also reflects the University’s commitment to knowledge transfer and community engagement, as mandated by its internal regulations and quality assurance framework.

The University implements this policy through a coordinated network of departments, laboratories, and research institutes — including the School of Agricultural Sciences, the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, and the Department of Agriculture, Crop Production and Rural Environment — all of which conduct applied research and outreach activities aimed at strengthening sustainable food production systems.

Key actions under this policy include:

Access to Knowledge and Research Outputs: The University disseminates scientific knowledge and practical solutions related to sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, soil and water management, biodiversity preservation, and climate-resilient farming techniques. Research findings and technical guides are made available to farmers, producers, and community organizations through open-access platforms, publications, and training materials.

Capacity-Building and Training: UTh organizes workshops, seminars, and field demonstrations that provide farmers and agri-food professionals with hands-on training in topics such as crop diversification, precision agriculture, circular economy in food systems, waste reduction, and sustainable fisheries management.

Student Education: Creation of educational materials on sustainable nutrition by experts, intended for university students.

Technology Transfer and Innovation Support: The University’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit and the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) facilitate collaboration between researchers and local producers, offering access to technologies, digital tools, and pilot systems that enhance productivity while protecting the environment.

Partnerships and Community Engagement: The University collaborates with municipalities, regional authorities, producer cooperatives, and local enterprises to co-develop practical solutions addressing food security challenges. It also partners with international networks to promote best practices and sustainable value chains.

Monitoring and Evaluation: The Vice-Rector for Research and Sustainability, in collaboration with the Agricultural and Environmental Research Committees, oversees the implementation of the policy, monitors outreach activities, and evaluates their social and environmental impact.

All outputs and initiatives related to food security and sustainable agriculture are included in the University’s Annual Sustainability and Social Responsibility Report, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Through this policy, the University of Thessaly reaffirms its leadership role as a regional and national hub for agricultural innovation, providing knowledge and practical support that enable communities to achieve food security, protect natural resources, and build resilient food systems for the future.
