Events for Local Farmers and Food Producers Policy

The University of Thessaly (UTh) is committed to strengthening the link between academic research and local agricultural practice by organizing and supporting events that promote knowledge transfer, innovation, and collaboration between the University and local food producers. This policy establishes the institutional framework for the planning, implementation, and monitoring of educational, scientific, and outreach events aimed at local farmers, cooperatives, and agri-food enterprises.

The policy aligns with Law 4957/2022 (Articles 251–254) concerning the social responsibility and regional engagement of higher education institutions, and directly contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2, SDG 12, and SDG 17).

The University, through the School of Agricultural Sciences, implements a structured annual programme of events to disseminate applied research outcomes, share innovative agricultural practices, and build sustainable partnerships within the regional agri-food ecosystem.

Each of the five departments of the School of Agricultural Sciences is required to organize at least one free event per academic year specifically targeting local farmers, cooperatives, and food producers. These events are designed to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences and to support the transition toward more sustainable, productive, and resilient agricultural systems.

The main objectives of the policy are to:

Facilitate continuous dialogue and cooperation between the academic community and the agricultural sector;

Provide practical training, demonstrations, and presentations based on current research in areas such as sustainable crop production, soil and water management, plant protection, aquaculture, and agri-technology;

Support local and regional development by promoting innovation, digitalization, and circular economy practices in agriculture and food systems;

Strengthen community engagement through open-access learning opportunities and collaborations with producer organizations, chambers of commerce, and regional authorities.

Events may take various forms, including conferences, workshops, seminars, field demonstrations, innovation fairs, and training sessions. While most events are offered free of charge to ensure inclusivity, the University may also organize specialized paid programmes for professional development or certification in collaboration with industry and governmental bodies.

Each department of the School of Agricultural Sciences is responsible for designing its annual event programme in alignment with its academic expertise and regional needs. The Rector, together with the Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences, ensures the coordination and monitoring of these activities.

The outcomes and participation data from all events are recorded and published annually in the University’s Sustainability Report, documenting the impact of the University’s contribution to regional agricultural development and food system resilience.

Through this policy, the University of Thessaly reaffirms its role as a leading institution for agricultural education and innovation, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange that empower farmers and food producers to meet the challenges of sustainable development.
