The University of Thessaly (UTh) is committed to promoting gender equality by enhancing the access of women to higher education and career opportunities. This policy formalizes the University’s strategy for offering women’s access schemes, including mentorship programs, scholarships, and other provisions designed to address barriers that limit women’s participation in academia and research.
Purpose and Strategic Framework
This policy aims to:
Increase women’s access to higher education, particularly in fields where women are underrepresented, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Provide targeted support to women throughout their academic careers, ensuring they have the resources and guidance necessary to succeed.
Foster an inclusive, gender-balanced academic environment that promotes women’s professional development and leadership.
Scope
This policy applies to:
Female students in all undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across the University.
Women faculty and staff, with an emphasis on leadership and professional development opportunities.
All University departments, administrative units, and offices involved in implementing these access schemes, including the Admissions Office, Scholarship Office, and Human Resources.
Key Provisions
Mentoring Programs for Women
The University will establish mentoring programs for female students, particularly in fields where they are underrepresented. These programs will pair students with senior female faculty members, researchers, or professionals in their field.
The mentoring process will focus on academic success, career guidance, and leadership development, providing a supportive network to help women overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.
Peer mentorship groups will be encouraged to foster a supportive environment where women can share experiences and strategies for success.
Scholarships for Women
The University will offer scholarships specifically for women, particularly in areas where female participation is low (e.g., STEM, economics, business).
These scholarships will reduce financial barriers and make education more accessible for women from marginalized backgrounds.
The University will also actively promote external scholarship opportunities for women, providing information and assistance with applications.
Support for Professional Development and Leadership
Female students and staff will have access to professional development programs, including leadership training, networking opportunities and skills workshops.
The University will foster female leadership in academic and administrative roles by encouraging women to apply for leadership positions within departments, research projects, and university governance.
Collaboration with external organizations and women’s networks will be encouraged to offer career advancement opportunities for women.
Inclusive and Supportive Campus Environment
The University will create an inclusive environment that supports the academic and personal growth of women.
This includes developing a campus culture that challenges gender stereotypes, promotes gender equality in all academic disciplines, and provides resources to help women thrive in their studies and careers.
A zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and harassment will be enforced, ensuring a safe and supportive space for women to pursue their academic and professional goals.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The Administration Office will track and report annually on the number of women benefiting from the mentoring programs, scholarships, and professional development initiatives.
Data will be collected to evaluate the effectiveness of these schemes in terms of participation rates, academic success, and career progression of women.
The University will continuously refine these access schemes based on the data, feedback from beneficiaries, and evolving best practices in gender equity.
Collaboration with External Partners
The University will collaborate with professional networks, NGOs, and corporate partners to provide additional resources and career opportunities for women.
Partnerships with women’s organizations will be cultivated to create a wider support network for female students and staff, enhancing their academic and professional success.
Governance and Responsibilities
The Rector is responsible for overseeing the implementation and coordination of this policy.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy will be reviewed every two years to assess its effectiveness and to make adjustments as necessary based on feedback from the University community and the data gathered through monitoring. The University will continue to build upon and expand its women’s access initiatives to ensure a more inclusive, supportive, and equitable academic environment.
Through this policy, the University of Thessaly reinforces its commitment to gender equality, supporting women’s educational advancement and career progression, and creating opportunities for women to excel in academia and beyond.
