Women’s Application in Underrepresented Subjects Policy
The University of Thessaly (UTh) is committed to promoting gender equality in all academic disciplines, particularly in fields where women have been traditionally underrepresented. This policy aims to encourage and support female applicants in underrepresented subjects, such as Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics. The University will achieve this by leveraging its outreach initiatives, collaborating with external partners including other universities, community groups, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and promoting regional and national campaigns to actively recruit women into these fields.
Purpose and Strategic Framework
The primary goal of this policy is to:
Increase female participation in underrepresented subjects, such as Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and other traditionally male-dominated fields.
Promote gender equality in education by addressing systemic barriers that deter women from pursuing studies in technical, engineering, and scientific disciplines.
Encourage collaboration with external organizations, including IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and other relevant NGOs, to provide opportunities for mentorship, scholarships, and community-building for women in these fields.
Scope
This policy applies to:
Undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University in fields where women are underrepresented.
Collaborative initiatives with universities, professional organizations like IEEE, and NGOs aimed at increasing female participation in technical and engineering disciplines.
University outreach campaigns that target female students, particularly those in regional and underserved areas.
Key Provisions
University Outreach Campaigns for Women
The University will design targeted outreach campaigns specifically aimed at encouraging women to apply for underrepresented subjects.
These campaigns will be implemented through various channels, including social media, educational fairs, webinars, and community events, specifically tailored to attract female students.
The University will partner with local schools, community organizations, and NGOs to reach young women and promote the opportunities available in underrepresented disciplines.
Collaboration with External Organizations
The University will collaborate with organizations such as IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) to create mentoring and networking opportunities for female students in Engineering and related fields.
The University will work with other universities and national/regional bodies to establish joint initiatives aimed at improving the gender balance in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs.
These collaborations may include scholarships, internship programs, female-focused events, and leadership training for women in technical fields.
Gender-Sensitive Scholarships and Financial Aid
The University will offer gender-specific scholarships to encourage women to pursue degrees in underrepresented disciplines, such as Engineering and Technology.
The University will also ensure that information on financial aid opportunities for women in these subjects is easily accessible, promoting equitable access to higher education.
Mentorship and Professional Development Programs
The University will establish mentorship programs connecting female students with female professionals in Engineering and other technical fields.
These programs will focus on career development, academic support, and building networks for women to thrive in their chosen fields.
Collaboration with industry partners will provide real-world exposure and internship opportunities for female students in technical disciplines.
Promotion of Female Role Models
The University will highlight the achievements of female faculty members, students, and alumni who have succeeded in underrepresented fields, particularly through events, media, and academic publications.
Female role models in Engineering and related fields will be showcased as part of the University’s outreach campaigns and IEEE partnerships, inspiring young women to pursue similar careers.
Monitoring and Reporting
The Administration Office will track female application rates, acceptance rates, and enrollment numbers in underrepresented subjects.
An annual report will be submitted to the Governing Council, detailing the progress of the University’s outreach campaigns, the impact of collaboration with external organizations, and the gender balance in applications and enrollments for these fields.
The University will adjust strategies based on the findings from the annual review to ensure the effectiveness of its efforts to attract women to underrepresented disciplines.
Governance and Responsibilities
The Rector will oversee the implementation of this policy, ensuring coordination between academic departments, student affairs, and external partners.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy will be reviewed annually to assess the effectiveness of the outreach initiatives and partnerships, and to identify areas for improvement. Adjustments will be made as necessary based on data, feedback from stakeholders, and evolving best practices in gender equality in higher education.
Through this policy, the University of Thessaly reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that women have equal access to education and career opportunities, particularly in fields where they have been historically underrepresented. This policy aims to empower women to pursue careers in Engineering, Technology, and other technical disciplines, thereby contributing to a more diverse and inclusive academic and professional landscape.
