Minimisation of Disposable Items<\/h3>\n

1. Purpose<\/h3>\n

The purpose of this Policy is to establish the University of Thessaly\u2019s commitment to minimizing the use of disposable and single-use items across all operations, promoting the use of durable, reusable, and sustainable alternatives. This Policy forms part of the University\u2019s waste reduction and sustainability strategy and aligns with Greek Law 4736\/2020, the EU Circular Economy Action Plan (2020), and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n

2. Scope<\/h3>\n

This Policy applies to all University units, departments, and facilities, including offices, \u00a0classrooms, laboratories, cafeterias, dormitories, and events. It encompasses all disposable items \u2014 including plastic, paper, cardboard, foam, and composite materials \u2014 used in food service, procurement, packaging, or other university-related activities.<\/p>\n

3. Legal and Institutional Context<\/h3>\n

This Policy aligns with: Law 4736\/2020 (\u03a6\u0395\u039a \u0391\u2019 200\/20.10.2020); Law 4819\/2021 (Circular Economy and Waste Management); EU Directive 2019\/904 (Single-Use Plastics); EU Circular Economy Action Plan (2020); and UN SDGs 11, 12, and 13.<\/p>\n

4. Policy Statement<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. The University of Thessaly shall progressively phase out disposable and single-use items, replacing them with reusable or compostable products.
    \n2. All University procurement and catering contracts shall include clauses prohibiting unnecessary disposable materials.
    \n3. University events and conferences must adopt a ‘zero single-use’ principle, using washable or reusable tableware and utensils.
    \n4. Offices and classrooms shall replace disposable cups, plates, and cutlery with reusable alternatives.
    \n5. Disposable paper and packaging shall be minimized through digitalization and bulk purchasing.
    \n6. Departments shall ensure proper recycling of all unavoidable disposable waste.
    \n7. Reusable containers, cups, and refillable systems shall be promoted across all campus food outlets.
    \n8. Awareness campaigns shall be implemented annually to inform the University community about the environmental impact of disposable items.
    \n9. The University shall monitor procurement data and waste audits to measure reductions in disposable item use.
    \n10. Annual progress shall be reported in the University\u2019s Sustainability Report.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    5. Implementation and Responsibilities<\/h3>\n

    – The \u00a0Vice Rector of Finance and Administrative Affairs shall oversee this Policy\u2019s implementation.
    \n– The Procurement Office shall ensure suppliers comply with non-disposable standards.
    \n– The Environmental Health and Safety Office shall monitor progress and conduct awareness campaigns.
    \n– The Catering and Facility Services shall eliminate disposable materials in food and beverage operations.<\/p>\n

    6. Monitoring and Review<\/h3>\n

    Performance will be evaluated annually based on procurement audits, waste volume analysis, and progress toward elimination targets. This Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years or earlier in response to legislative or institutional developments.<\/p>\n
