Disposable Policy \u2014 Extensions to Services and Supply Chain<\/h3>\n

1. Purpose<\/h3>\n

The purpose of this Policy is to ensure that the University of Thessaly\u2019s commitment to minimizing disposable and single-use items is extended to outsourced services, contractors, and suppliers. This Policy aims to embed environmental responsibility and sustainability into all procurement and partnership practices, ensuring full consistency with the University\u2019s internal waste reduction policies.<\/p>\n

2. Scope<\/h3>\n

This Policy applies to all external partners, contractors, and suppliers providing goods or services to the University of Thessaly, including but not limited to: catering and food services, cleaning and maintenance contracts, construction and facility management, laboratory supply chains, event organization, and all third-party procurement and logistics operations.<\/p>\n

3. Legal and Institutional Context<\/h3>\n

This Policy aligns with: Law 4736\/2020 (\u03a6\u0395\u039a \u0391\u2019 200\/20.10.2020); Law 4819\/2021 (Circular Economy and Waste Management); Law 4412\/2016 (Public Procurement and Environmental Clauses); EU Directive 2019\/904 (Single-Use Plastics Directive); EU Circular Economy Action Plan (2020); and UN SDGs 11, 12, and 13.<\/p>\n

4. Policy Statement<\/h3>\n

  1. All outsourced services and suppliers shall comply with the University\u2019s Disposable and Single-Use Minimisation
    \n2. Service contracts shall explicitly include sustainability clauses prohibiting the use of unnecessary disposable materials and single-use plastics.
    \n3. All catering and food suppliers must provide reusable, compostable, or biodegradable containers, utensils, and packaging.
    \n4. Cleaning and maintenance contractors shall use refillable and recyclable containers and prioritize environmentally certified products.
    \n5. Construction and renovation contractors must avoid disposable site materials and packaging wherever feasible.
    \n6. Laboratory suppliers shall minimize single-use plastics and provide returnable or recyclable packaging systems.
    \n7. Suppliers shall demonstrate compliance through environmental certifications (e.g., ISO 14001, EMAS) or equivalent sustainability standards.
    \n8. The Procurement Office shall integrate environmental criteria in all tenders and supplier evaluations.
    \n9. Non-compliance may result in contractual penalties or exclusion from future procurement processes.
    \n10. The University shall maintain a register of approved sustainable suppliers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    5. Implementation and Responsibilities<\/h3>\n

    – The \u00a0Vice Rector of Finance and Administrative Affairsoversees the implementation of this Policy.
    \n– The Procurement Office is responsible for incorporating sustainability clauses in all supplier and contractor agreements.
    \n– The Environmental Health and Safety Office monitors compliance and provides guidance to contractors.
    \n– Each Department and Unit is responsible for ensuring third-party adherence during service delivery.<\/p>\n

    6. Monitoring and Review<\/h3>\n

    Regular audits will verify contractor compliance with sustainability clauses. Non-compliance will trigger corrective measures or procurement sanctions. This Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years or sooner if legal or institutional updates occur.<\/p>\n
