Purpose<\/h3>\n<p>The purpose of this Policy is to define the University of Thessaly\u2019s commitment to collaborating with local communities, authorities, and stakeholders in the protection, management, and sustainable use of shared aquatic ecosystems. The University recognizes the ecological, cultural, and economic importance of maintaining the health of aquatic systems shared with regional populations.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Scope<\/h3>\n<p>This Policy applies to all University departments and research centers engaged in environmental, biological, or hydrological studies; community outreach and education programs related to water stewardship; partnerships with municipalities, NGOs, and other educational institutions; and applied research or restoration initiatives affecting shared aquatic ecosystems.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Legal and Institutional Context<\/h3>\n<p>This Policy aligns with: Law 3199\/2003 (Water Protection and Management); Law 3937\/2011 (Biodiversity Conservation); Law 4819\/2021 (Circular Economy and Environmental Protection); EU Water Framework Directive (2000\/60\/EC); EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008\/56\/EC); and UN SDGs 6, 14, and 17.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Policy Statement<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The University commits to cooperating with local communities and stakeholders to preserve and restore shared aquatic ecosystems.<br \/>\n2. The University shall:<br \/>\n&#8211; Develop partnerships with municipalities and local agencies for joint water management projects.<br \/>\n&#8211; Participate in ecosystem monitoring and data sharing initiatives.<br \/>\n&#8211; Collaborate with NGOs and civil society groups on conservation and education programs.<br \/>\n&#8211; Promote responsible use of shared aquatic resources.<br \/>\n&#8211; Provide scientific support for policy-making and community decision processes.<br \/>\n3. Educational and research programs shall include community participation and co-management components.<br \/>\n4. Collaboration will be based on transparency, inclusivity, and respect for local knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>5. Implementation and Responsibilities<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; The Rector oversees implementation.<br \/>\n&#8211; The Departments of (a) History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology, (b) Public and One Health, \u00a0and (c) Ichthyology &amp; Aquatic Environment \u00a0lead collaborative research and technical support.<br \/>\n&#8211; The Sustainability Committee monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.<br \/>\n&#8211; The Public Relations Office supports awareness and outreach campaigns.<br \/>\n&#8211; The Center for Lifelong Learning.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Monitoring and Review<\/h3>\n<p>The Policy will be reviewed every three (3) years. Indicators include the number of collaborative projects, level of community participation, ecosystem health indicators, and extent of partnerships with local authorities.<\/p>\n<h3>7.
