Purpose<\/h3>\n<p>This policy establishes the University of Thessaly\u2019s institutional framework for extending education on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the wider community, including alumni, local residents, and displaced or vulnerable populations. It aims to promote inclusive lifelong learning, sustainability literacy, and social empowerment through outreach education, workshops, public lectures, and participatory programmes.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Scope<\/h3>\n<p>This policy applies to:<br \/>\n&#8211; All outreach and community education initiatives of the University.<br \/>\n&#8211; Programmes, workshops, or seminars related to the SDGs and sustainability.<br \/>\n&#8211; Collaborative educational projects with municipalities, NGOs, schools, or cultural associations.<br \/>\n&#8211; Actions directed toward alumni, local communities, or socially vulnerable groups (e.g., refugees, migrants, unemployed citizens).<br \/>\n&#8211; Non-formal and informal educational activities promoting awareness of sustainable development.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Definitions<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; Community Outreach Education: Structured learning opportunities delivered by the University for the general public or specific community groups, outside formal degree programmes.<br \/>\n&#8211; Lifelong Learning: Continuous acquisition of knowledge and skills throughout life, fostering active citizenship and employability.<br \/>\n&#8211; Sustainability Literacy: The capacity to understand and act upon environmental, social, and economic sustainability challenges.<br \/>\n&#8211; Inclusive Education: Ensuring equal learning opportunities for all, regardless of background, status, or identity.<br \/>\n&#8211; Displaced People: Individuals forced to leave their habitual residence due to conflict, disaster, or socio-economic instability, including refugees and asylum seekers.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Policy Statement<\/h3>\n<p>The University of Thessaly reaffirms its role as a public and socially responsible institution committed to the promotion of sustainable development education for all members of society. Accordingly, the University shall:<br \/>\n1. Develop community-oriented educational programmes on the SDGs and sustainability.<br \/>\n2. Offer workshops, open courses, and public seminars accessible to local residents, alumni, and civic organizations.<br \/>\n3. Collaborate with municipalities, NGOs, and international partners to deliver inclusive and context-specific sustainability education.<br \/>\n4. Design educational initiatives for vulnerable groups, including displaced persons and marginalized communities.<br \/>\n5. Encourage student and faculty participation in outreach education as part of service-learning or volunteering activities.<br \/>\n6. Promote intercultural dialogue and social cohesion through SDG education.<br \/>\n7. Ensure all outreach programmes align with the University\u2019s ethical, academic, and social responsibility standards.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Implementation Responsibilities<\/h3>\n<p>The Center for Education and Lifelong Learning is responsible for implementing this policy. Specific responsibilities include:<br \/>\n&#8211; Planning and approving community-based SDG educational activities.<br \/>\n&#8211; Coordinating with external partners and funding agencies.<br \/>\n&#8211; Supporting academic staff in developing outreach modules.<br \/>\n&#8211; Ensuring accessibility and inclusion for all participants.<br \/>\n&#8211; Evaluating the impact of community education activities.<br \/>\n&#8211; Submitting annual progress reports to the Senate Committee on Sustainability and Outreach.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Quality Assurance and Monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; All SDG outreach programmes shall undergo evaluation based on participation, inclusiveness, learning impact, and community benefit.<br \/>\n&#8211; The Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP) shall oversee the assessment and ensure compliance with national and European standards.<br \/>\n&#8211; Annual reports on outreach education shall form part of the University\u2019s Sustainability and Social Responsibility Report.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Ethical and Educational Principles<\/h3>\n<p>This policy upholds:<br \/>\n&#8211; Accessibility and inclusion for all community members.<br \/>\n&#8211; Respect for human dignity, diversity, and intercultural understanding.<br \/>\n&#8211; Academic integrity and non-partisanship in outreach activities.<br \/>\n&#8211; Collaboration and mutual benefit between the University and society.<br \/>\n&#8211; Lifelong learning as a right and a public good.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Review and Amendment<\/h3>\n<p>This policy shall be reviewed every three (3) years or earlier if required. Revisions shall be proposed by the Center for Education and Lifelong Learning and approved by the Governing Council.<\/p>\n<h3>9.
