{"id":787,"date":"2025-11-07T18:53:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T16:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdg.uth.gr\/?page_id=787"},"modified":"2025-11-09T23:04:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T21:04:58","slug":"6-4-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sdg.uth.gr\/en\/6-4-1\/","title":{"rendered":"6.4.1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Water Reuse Policy<\/h3>\n<p>The University of Thessaly (UTh) is committed to promoting the sustainable and responsible use of water resources across all its facilities.<\/p>\n<p>This policy establishes a framework for the reuse of treated water from campus operations to reduce potable water demand, enhance resource efficiency, and protect the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Purpose<\/p>\n<p>The primary objectives of this policy are to:<\/p>\n<p>Encourage the reuse of treated wastewater and other non-potable water sources for suitable applications;<\/p>\n<p>Reduce freshwater consumption and dependence on municipal water supplies;<\/p>\n<p>Minimize environmental impact by decreasing wastewater discharge;<\/p>\n<p>Ensure all water reuse practices comply with Greek and EU legislation and public health standards;<\/p>\n<p>Support the implementation of SDG 6 (Clean Water), SDG 12 (Sustainable Production and Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).<\/p>\n<p>Legal and Technical Framework<\/p>\n<p>This policy aligns with:<\/p>\n<p>Law 3199\/2003 on water management,<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Decree 51\/2007 (transposing Directive 2000\/60\/EC \u2013 EU Water Framework Directive),<\/p>\n<p>Joint Ministerial Decision 145116\/2011 on the reuse of treated wastewater,<\/p>\n<p>EU Regulation 2020\/741 on minimum requirements for water reuse,<\/p>\n<p>Law 4042\/2012 on environmental protection and resource efficiency,<\/p>\n<p>and the University of Thessaly Environmental Sustainability Plan.<\/p>\n<p>Scope<\/p>\n<p>This policy applies to all:<\/p>\n<p>University campuses and research facilities,<\/p>\n<p>Agricultural experimental fields, sports complexes, and landscaped areas,<\/p>\n<p>Projects involving water treatment, irrigation, cleaning, and cooling systems,<\/p>\n<p>Staff, contractors, and researchers engaged in water management operations.<\/p>\n<p>Key Provisions<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Treated Wastewater Reuse<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Treated effluent from University wastewater systems shall be reused, where feasible, for irrigation of green areas, agricultural experiments, toilet flushing, or non-potable cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>All reuse applications must meet the quality standards defined in KYA 145116\/2011 and EU Regulation 2020\/741.<\/p>\n<p>Reuse operations shall be monitored to ensure microbiological and chemical safety.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Rainwater Harvesting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>New and existing buildings should include rainwater collection systems for use in irrigation, cleaning, or cooling.<\/p>\n<p>Storage and distribution systems must be designed according to building and public health standards.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Greywater Systems<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Facilities such as dormitories, laboratories, and sports centers are encouraged to install greywater recycling systems for non-potable reuse.<\/p>\n<p>Separate plumbing and signage shall ensure no cross-connection with potable systems.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Monitoring and Reporting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Technical Services Department shall monitor reused water volumes and quality, maintaining records for compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Annual sustainability reports will include data on water reuse rates and savings achieved.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Research and Education<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The University of Thessaly promotes research on water reuse technologies, treatment innovations, and environmental safety.<\/p>\n<p>Educational activities will raise awareness of safe water reuse practices among students and staff.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Health and Safety<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>All reused water systems must include clear labeling, backflow prevention, and safety signage.<\/p>\n<p>Governance<\/p>\n<p>Responsible Authority: Rector.<\/p>\n<p>Operational Oversight: Technical Services Department.<\/p>\n<p>Scientific Oversight: Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Agriculture, Crop Production and Rural Environment.<\/p>\n<p>Review<\/p>\n<p>This policy shall be reviewed every three years, or earlier in response to new regulations or technological advances in water reuse.<\/p>\n<p>Through this policy, the University of Thessaly reaffirms its commitment to closing the water loop, protecting natural resources, and building a sustainable and resilient campus ecosystem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Water Reuse Policy The University of Thessaly (UTh) is committed to promoting the sustainable and responsible use of water resources across all its facilities.
