{"id":799,"date":"2025-11-07T19:00:28","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T17:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdg.uth.gr\/?page_id=799"},"modified":"2025-11-09T23:24:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T21:24:32","slug":"6-5-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sdg.uth.gr\/en\/6-5-3\/","title":{"rendered":"6.5.3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Off-Campus Water Conservation Support Policy<\/h3>\n<p>The University of Thessaly (UTh) actively supports water conservation and sustainable water management initiatives beyond its campuses, contributing to the resilience and well-being of local, regional, and national communities.<\/p>\n<p>This policy establishes the framework for collaborative actions, research, education, and capacity building aimed at promoting responsible water use outside the University\u2019s physical boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Purpose<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this policy is to:<\/p>\n<p>Strengthen the University\u2019s role as a knowledge and innovation hub for sustainable water management;<\/p>\n<p>Facilitate technical, educational, and scientific collaboration with external stakeholders;<\/p>\n<p>Support local governments, farmers, businesses, and NGOs in implementing efficient water use practices;<\/p>\n<p>Encourage student and faculty engagement in community-based water initiatives;<\/p>\n<p>Advance the University\u2019s contribution to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).<\/p>\n<p>Legal and Strategic Framework<\/p>\n<p>This policy is aligned with:<\/p>\n<p>Law 4957\/2022, Article 87 (on universities\u2019 responsibility to promote sustainability and regional development);<\/p>\n<p>Law 3199\/2003 (Integrated Water Resources Management);<\/p>\n<p>EU Water Framework Directive 2000\/60\/EC;<\/p>\n<p>Law 3852\/2010 (Kallikratis Plan) on regional cooperation between universities and municipalities; and<\/p>\n<p>Scope<\/p>\n<p>This policy applies to:<\/p>\n<p>All University departments, research centers, and laboratories collaborating with communities, industries, and public authorities;<\/p>\n<p>Outreach and extension activities aimed at improving water conservation in agriculture, industry, and households;<\/p>\n<p>Educational and awareness initiatives targeting schools and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Key Provisions<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Community Engagement and Support<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The University will provide technical advice, training, and demonstration programs on sustainable irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and water reuse.<\/p>\n<p>Departments of Agriculture, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Sciences will coordinate outreach activities with local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Priority shall be given to rural and water-stressed areas in the Region of Thessaly.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Capacity Building and Training<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>UTh shall organize workshops, online seminars, and field demonstrations for:<\/p>\n<p>Local farmers and cooperatives,<\/p>\n<p>Public utilities and water boards, and<\/p>\n<p>School teachers and community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Training will focus on efficient irrigation, greywater reuse, and leakage control technologies.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Applied Research and Innovation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The University will promote applied research projects addressing local water challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty and students may collaborate on pilot projects testing smart water systems, precision irrigation, and reuse technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Results shall be shared openly with regional and national authorities.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Partnerships and Cooperation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The University will maintain formal agreements (MoUs) with municipalities, the Region of Thessaly, and local enterprises to jointly promote water conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Cooperation shall extend to EU-funded and national programs, such as LIFE, Horizon Europe, and Interreg.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Student and Volunteer Involvement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Students may participate in service-learning projects and volunteer actions focused on water education in schools and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Such participation shall be recognized as community engagement credit under the University\u2019s social responsibility framework.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Monitoring and Evaluation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Office of Environmental Sustainability shall maintain a record of outreach actions, beneficiaries, and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Impact indicators shall include:<\/p>\n<p>Number of projects and training sessions conducted,<\/p>\n<p>Number of beneficiaries reached,<\/p>\n<p>Estimated water savings achieved, and<\/p>\n<p>Community satisfaction feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Governance<\/p>\n<p>Responsible Authority: Rector<\/p>\n<p>Operational Oversight: Technical Services Office<\/p>\n<p>Academic Leads: Departments of Agriculture, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Sciences<\/p>\n<p>Partners: Municipalities, Regional Authorities, NGOs, and private-sector associations<\/p>\n<p>Review<\/p>\n<p>This policy shall be reviewed every three years or earlier to reflect technological progress and regional water needs.<\/p>\n<p>Through this policy, the University of Thessaly extends its commitment to sustainable water use beyond its campuses, acting as a regional catalyst for knowledge, innovation, and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Off-Campus Water Conservation Support Policy The University of Thessaly (UTh) actively supports water conservation and sustainable water management initiatives beyond its campuses, contributing to the resilience and well-being of local, regional, and national communities.
